Annie Sullivan and Class of 1893
This class picture is of Annie Sullivan and her students in 1893. The
Museum has the original School Register for the years 1892-1894. When
this picture was taken she had 28 children in grades one through seven.
Maggie Parker and Class of 1930
When it opened, the new school only used one classroom. Maggie Parker
was the teacher during the years 1924-1925 school year. She remained as
teacher until 1933. This is a picture of her and her 24 students in
January 1930. She received a salary of $150.00 per month and was paid
$5.00 more if she cleaned the school.
The children's names are familiar to those who have been in the Conejo
Valley. Represented here are members of the Borchard, Kelley, Hays,
Friedrich and Espinosa families and others. Many of them are still
living today and their descendants still live in the area and are
contributing to the community.
Miss Lacey and Class of 1938
Miss Lacey and Miss Friedrich and Class of 1939
The school continued to use only one classroom until 1938 when another
teacher was hired. At that time, the lower grades were in one room and
the upper grades in the other. Miss Elma Lacey had been teacher for
three years and then Pauline Friedrich, who had been born in the valley
and attended the original Timber School as a child, became the second
teacher for 8 years. Miss Lacey later married Milton Borchard.

Class of 1958
1955, a newspaper item related the names of those living the valley that
had gone to Timber School and were serving the community. Some of those
names were, Adolph Friedrich Jr. Donald Haigh, Ed Borchard Jr. Caspar
Borchard Jr. Simon Hays, Florence Hampton, Fred Kelley, Reba and Allan
Hays and Oscar Olsen. Perhaps these names are unfamiliar to you, but
some of them still have descendants in the area.
Going to Timber School at the time this article was written were members
of the Janss family; Peter, Dagny and Larry Janss, names from a family
we all know. Larry Janss has given back to the community so very much.
His picture is in the 3rd row at the far right. Also shown is Ralph
Kelley, another person known in the valley today. His picture is in the
top row, first from the left.

Timber School 1942 Lunch Area and Tank House
Located approximately 100 feet southwest of the schoolhouse along Kelly
Road. In 1940 County Health Officers notified the County Superintendent
of Schools that the tank had “bad water” and recommended a pressure
system to replace the tank. Both structures may have been replaced by
the 1948 auditorium.
Timber School 1949 Auditorium Addition News Clipping
The Timber School Auditorium (or Multi-Purpose Room) was added to the
west side of the schoolhouse in 1948. The auditorium was also designed
by the prominent architect Roy C. Wilson, providing a link both
esthetically and historically to the earlier 1924 building. An added
concrete pathway and canopy “shelter” physically joins the new building
with the old.
